C’est en 1987 que j’ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 explorer la c\u00e9ramique.\u00a0 Pendent deux ans j’ai \u00e9tudi\u00e9 les techniques de fabrication manuelle dans un atelier communautaire de la ville de Winnipeg.\u00a0 Apr\u00e8s cette courte introduction \u00e0 la poterie, ma carri\u00e8re musicale prend l’essentiel de mon temps et je mets la c\u00e9ramique de cot\u00e9.\u00a0 La musique avait toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 ma priorit\u00e9, mais \u00e0 travailler comme artiste ind\u00e9pendante pendant 25 ans je me suis retrouv\u00e9e plus souvent\u00a0 \u00e0 porter le chapeau de g\u00e9rant, d’agent ou de secr\u00e9taire que celui de l’artiste.\u00a0 \u00c7a m’a \u00e9puis\u00e9e.\u00a0 J’avais besoin de retrouver ma cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

En 1998 j’ai eu l’occasion de refaire connaissance avec l’argile et sa boue lisse et fra\u00eeche m\u2019a fait du bien.\u00a0 J’ai donc poursuivi ce plaisir et en 1999 j’ai rencontr\u00e9 celui qui deviendra mon mentor, Kevin Kushnier.\u00a0 J’ai suivi ses cours puis lou\u00e9 de l’espace dans son studio et je suis finalement devenue son apprenti.\u00a0 Il m’a enseign\u00e9 la roue de potier, l’usage des fours \u00e0 gaz et \u00e9lectriques.\u00a0 Depuis l’an 2002 je suis poti\u00e8re \u00e0 plein temps et l’essentiel de ma production se veut utilitaire.<\/p>\n

Pr\u00e9sentement je fais des pi\u00e8ces tant mont\u00e9es \u00e0 la main que mont\u00e9es sur la roue de potier et tant pour un usage quotidien que pour l’embellissement de son espace.\u00a0 Je travaille le gr\u00e8s et la porcelaine et cuit la c\u00e9ramique dans un four \u00e9lectrique.\u00a0 Je suis tr\u00e8s influenc\u00e9e par la nature, utilisant herbes et coquilles pour cr\u00e9er des textures.<\/p>\n

Mon objectif est de cr\u00e9er beaut\u00e9 et caract\u00e8re dans chaque pi\u00e8ce que je sculpte.\u00a0 Joindre la beaut\u00e9 et l’utilitaire me permet de d\u00e9couvrir de nouvelles avenues d’expression.\u00a0 J’aime exp\u00e9rimenter avec les formes, les id\u00e9es et les gla\u00e7ures.\u00a0 Ces exp\u00e9rimentations sont la source de mon apprentissage continu et de ma cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

I began my journey as a potter in 1987 and studied hand-building techniques for 2 years at a City of Winnipeg recreation facility.\u00a0 After that brief introduction to pottery I drifted away from it when my career in music took over.\u00a0 Music was my first priority, but after working singer and songwriter for almost 25 years I became more focused on the business aspects of music rather than directing my energies towards the creative process of songwriting and\u00a0performing.<\/p>\n

In 1998 my path led me back to clay.\u00a0 I accidentally stubbed my toe on a bag of clay at a friend’s house and then asked if I could use some clay and make something. \u00a0Since that day I’ve noticed how nicely all things clay-related have fallen into my lap.<\/p>\n

In 1999 I met my clay mentor Kevin Kushnier at The Blue Door Clay Studio.\u00a0 I took his classes then rented space in his studio and after a short time became his apprentice.\u00a0 I received some intensive instruction on the potter\u2019s wheel and sat in as Kevin taught his classes. \u00a0I learned additional hand building techniques and was given instruction in many types of surface decoration.\u00a0 I learned how to fire both electric and gas kilns.<\/p>\n

Since 2002 when I became a full time studio potter I\u2019ve focused on functional pottery. \u00a0I make pieces that are both hand built and made on the potter’s wheel; that are both functional and sculptural; that can be used every day to create beautiful meals and beautiful surroundings.<\/p>\n

I work mainly in stoneware and sometimes porcelain and high fire in an electric kiln. \u00a0I\u2019m surrounded by nature and therefore I’m greatly influenced by it.\u00a0 I often incorporate nature’s\u00a0objects into my hand built work (leaves, seed pods and grasses) to achieve a variety of surface effects.<\/p>\n

My path in ceramics has been comparatively easy to that of music. \u00a0I’ve been given supplies in the way of dried up old blocks of clay (which can be easily reconstituted), raw glaze materials, tools and bags and pots of vintage glazes. \u00a0Lately it is those things that have influenced my work the most. \u00a0Since these things find their way to me I honour their presence in my studio by working with them and letting them lead me in the creation of my functional ware. \u00a0My goal is to create beauty and character in each individual piece.<\/p>\n

Something different touches each of us when we hold a bowl, cup or teapot.\u00a0 What you feel in each piece of pottery is the living earth that has been transformed by the potter\u2019s hands by what is in their heart and soul and their creative mind.<\/p>\n
